Investigators probing shooting involving ex-soldier, recovery of explosive device

Police and soldiers are investigating a shooting incident and the recovery of an explosive device on Tuesday in Tolgate, Clarendon.

Reports are that about 11:30 a.m., an argument developed between the owner of an auto shop and an ex-soldier.

It is alleged that during the confrontation, the ex-soldier threatened to "bomb up the place" while clutching a black plastic bag.

The businessman and employees managed to lock themselves inside the building.

However, the ex-soldier insisted on gaining access.

The businessman, who is also a licensed firearm holder, reportedly fired in the ex-soldier's direction, hitting him in the upper body.

The ex-soldier is being treated at hospital. His firearm was subsequently seized.

The bag that he claimed contained a bomb was left at the scene pending inspection by the Jamaica Defence Force's explosive ordnance team.

Approximately 7 p.m., the scene was visited by personnel from the May Pen Fire Department and members of the JDF, including the explosive ordnance team.

The police said the content of the bag was successfully destroyed by the technical team and no one was injured or property damaged in the process.
