Israel conducts strike in Beirut

The Israel Defense Forces says it has conducted a precise strike in Beirut after announcing on social media that it is targeting the capital of Lebanon.

A BBC reporter on the ground said she heard at least three big explosions in Dahieh, a suburb in southern Beirut.

She described seeing thick smoke over the neighbourhood and likened the sound to that of the bombardment during Israel's airstrike on Dahieh on September 27.

That strike killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Eight Israeli soldiers have since died in combat, the first inside Lebanon since the invasion began.

Earlier, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran would pay, after firing around 180 missiles at Israel on Tuesday

Lebanese officials say more than 1,000 people have been killed in the past two weeks, while around a million may now be displaced.
