Director of Elections Glasspole Brown

Voters go to the polls today in the country's 15th parliamentary general election since Independence in 1962.

There will also be local by-elections for three local government seats.

Voters are being urged by electoral officials to cooperate for a smooth  process.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica says voting will take place in 7,294 polling stations at 2,153 locations in the 63 constituencies across the island.

There are 190 candidates in total, with 184 contesting the parliamentary general election and six contesting the by-elections.

Four registered political parties are contesting the elections; Jamaica Labour Party, People's National Party, Jamaica Progressive Party and the United Independents' Congress.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown, speaking Tuesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said electors will be marshalled in an orderly manner to cast their votes.

The incumbent Jamaica Labour Party, led by 53 year-old Dr Andrew Holness, is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive term for his party, while Mark Golding, 60, is leading the People's National Party into a general election for the first time.

This marks the 15th parliamentary general election in Jamaica since the country attained political independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. The JLP and the PNP have each won seven of the 14 contested so far.
