Jamaica Agriculture Society reports million-dollar losses for farmers after Hurricane Beryl

JAS President Lenworth Fulton

The Jamaica Agriculture Society says farmers suffered millions of dollars in losses due to Wednesday's heavy rains associated with Hurricane Beryl.

JAS President Lenworth Fulton says thousands of acres of banana in St Mary and Portland have been destroyed.

He says more than 20 acres of Papaya were also destroyed in St Mary.

Other crops such as cassava, melon, carrots, cantaloupe have been significantly affected in St Elizabeth and St Catherine.

Mr Fulton says chicken farmers also took a major hit.

"Most chicken farmers cut stakes and make their pens, so these structures have been damaged and the birds battered," he said.
