Jamaica under Tropical Storm Watch as 'Melissa' forms in the Caribbean

Tropical Storm Melissa has become the 13th that named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season and the first this year in the Caribbean.

Forecasters say the storm could become a hurricane later this week.

Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic are being warned to monitor the storm closely for potential impacts.

The National Hurricane Center says Melissa is expected to turn to the northwest and north before approaching the southwestern portion of Haiti and Jamaica later this week.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jamaica, while Haiti is under a Hurricane Watch.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica, which earlier upgraded the Severe Weather Alert to a Tropical Storm Watch, says heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds could affect primarily northeastern and southern parishes late Wednesday and Thursday.

The rainfall could continue into the weekend.

For the marine areas, the forecast is also for possible tropical storm conditions to affect all zones Wednesday and Thursday, especially inshore and offshore the south coast.

Fishers on the cays and banks are advised to evacuate immediately and start returning to the mainland.

Other small craft operators in Jamaica's coastal waters are advised to return to port. Those who are in port are advised not to venture out.
