JamaicaEye monitoring centre opened at Denham Town Police Station

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has said the commissioning of the Denham Town JamaicaEye Monitoring Centre at the Denham Town Police Station is a strategic move to increase visibility in areas that have faced chronic challenges with crime, gang activity and public disorder.

Dr. Chang said the monitoring centre represents an investment of approximately $300 million under the JamaicaEye programme, which continues to expand its footprint in both urban and rural communities across the country.

In his address at the ceremony on Thursday, Dr. Chang noted that the latest JamaicaEye build-out amounts to 285 high definition closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, now fully installed and operational across Denham Town, Waltham Park Road and the busy downtown Kingston business district.

"It's the area that the division covers and we have seen significant reduction in major crimes and homicide, and we expect that with the full operationalisation of the CCTV cameras, it will even go further," he said.

The monitoring centre is a "strategic move to increase visibility", the minister outlined, adding that it will provide a 360-degree view of the surrounding area for 24 hours, seven days per week.

The Denham Town monitoring centre is the latest commissioned into service following the Olympic Gardens centre in May.

In total there are nine monitoring centres in operation across various town centres, with plans to replicate the initiative island-wide.

The Ministry of National Security said the National CCTV Master Plan requires an additional 2,500 CCTV cameras to be installed over a three-year period.
