Jamaican attorney Dr. Chantal Ononaiwu was on Tuesday morning sworn in as a judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice.
The ceremony was held at King's House.
Dr. Ononaiwu was appointed to fill the vacancy created after Justice Jacob Wint retired on December 31, 2023.
In her speech after taking the oath of office, Dr. Ononaiwu said she valued the opportunity to continue to serve the Caribbean community as a judge, while noting that she is the third woman to assume the role.
"It is a privilege to join an institution in which the president, judges and staff work with such deliberation in service of its mission to provide accessible, fair and efficient justice for the people and states of the community, and for which excellence is integral to its vision and values," she said.
Dr. Ononaiwu is an attorney-at-law with over 20 years' experience at the bar. She has specialist expertise in Caribbean Community law and international law, including international trade law, and varied legal experience as an adjudicator, litigator, legal advisor and university lecturer.
