Jamaican drug dealer happy to be arrested

A Jamaican drug smuggler apprehended in the UK expressed joy at being given a jail term.

48-year-old Delroy Thompson told a London court on Thursday that after he was caught at London's Gatwick Airport, a gunman went to his home looking for him.

Thompson said he was happy to be safely locked up in prison.

The Jamaican, who admitted to illegally importing nearly 37 kilograms of ganja worth about 78,000 pounds, was jailed for three years.

Thompson and his wife, Evelyn Jones, arrived at Gatwick on October 29 on a flight from Jamaica.

Forty-eight packages of ganja were found in his luggage.

Lawyers defending Thompson said he committed the offence under pressure after being told that the only way he would get back to the UK would be in a box.

It is now up to the Home Office to decide if Thompson, who holds a Jamaican passport, but has indefinite leave to remain in the UK, should be deported.
