Jamaica is mourning the loss of one of its most influential musical figures, Ernie Smith, who has died at a hospital in Florida.
His wife, Claudette Bailey Smith, revealed on Tuesday that the veteran singer had been admitted on April 7 and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit following a surgical procedure.
Ernie Smith, born Glenroy Anthony Michael Archangelo Smith in Kingston in May 1945, was widely regarded as a pioneer of Jamaican music, known for his rich baritone voice and socially conscious lyrics.
He rose to prominence in the late 1960s and 1970s with a string of hit songs, including Life Is Just For Living, Nice Time, Duppy Gun Man.
In late 70s, he gravitated towards gospel-influenced music, with the popular I'll Sing For Jesus, continuing to connect with audiences across generations.
Smith's contributions to Jamaican culture have left an indelible mark, and his work remains a significant part of the island's musical legacy.
