Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, Leader of the incumbent Jamaica Labour Party, has promised that, should the party be returned to power in the September 3 election, it will double the national minimum wage over the next few years.
Dr Holness, speaking at a rally in Spanish Town on Sunday night, said that in the first year, the minimum wage would move from $16,000 to $18,500, followed by more increases over the next two years.
The Prime Minister argued that this proposed progressive change in the minimum wage is necessary to attract people to the labour force.
