JMDA says closure of Cornwall Regional Hospital might be necessary

The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, JMDA, is in agreement with the position that it might become necessary to close the Cornwall Regional Hospital amid signs that the air quality crisis if far from over.

The Nurses Association of  Jamaica and the Jamaica Workers Union, which have members at the hospital, have called for its shutdown so that comprehensive action can be taken to address the problem.

JMDA President, Dr. Elon Thompson, explained why the closure of  Cornwall Regional may materialise noting that he would not encourage staff or patients to operate in a hostile environment. In the meantime, the JMDA says it will be closely monitoring the situation at Cornwall Regional especially given the health risks.

Despite the debate whether the Cornwall Regional Hospital should be shut down due to the fumes affecting its workers, the Health Ministry has announced that comprehensive electrical upgrades are to be conducted.    This announcement was made yesterday by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton at a town hall meeting in Montego Bay.

The meeting was called to address the plethora of issues which have arisen due to the fumes.  Dr Tufton outlined that the upgrades were overdue and the opportunity has been created for changes to be made.
