Nakinskie Robinson reports
The St. Thomas police say the suspect in the murder of a Jamaican-American teenager in East Prospect on Wednesday, who was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation, was not of unsound mind as was previously reported.
He has been identified as 19-year-old Oshane Thompson, of a Seaforth address in the parish.
The police say 14-year-old Teyanna Sutherland was found inside her father's house, in the Blue Mahoe community, with multiple stab wounds.
They went in search of her attacker and a man of unsound mind was initially taken into custody but was later released.
Members of the operations support team, acting on information, then went to a concrete building along the seaside where they observed blood leading to a building.
On entering the building they were allegedly attacked by a naked man, later identified as Oshane Thompson, armed with a machete.
The police opened fire hitting him. He was pronounced dead at hospital.
The police also say the preliminary report that suggested that the teenager was raped was not accurate.
The teen's murder has increased the number of people killed in St. Thomas to 10 since the start of the year compared with 11 for the similar period last year.
It was reported that Teyanna, who resided in the United States, was visiting her father, a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, when she was attacked.
The intruder gained entry through an open grille to the back of the house.
A tussle ensued during which the teenager was stabbed multiple times all over the body.
Teyanna was able to call her father's phone but could not communicate with him.
The concerned father rushed to the house where he found his child wounded in the kitchen.
She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
