The Jamaica Teachers Association says the low rate of compensation is among factors driving teacher migration.
Dr Mark Smith, the out-going JTA President, says Jamaican teachers are among the lowest paid in the region, only surpassing Haiti.
He says there is an urgent need to address the teacher remuneration challenge if the country is serious about education.
Dr Smith was speaking Teachers Time, a weekly programme of the JTA, aired on Radio Jamaica.
