The revenue department of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) has started sending letters to car dealerships across the municipality to recover outstanding fees for signage and advertisements.

Addressing the monthly meeting of the KSAMC on Tuesday, Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby said 188 letters were printed for dispatch with billing applied retroactively for several years.

He said this is in line with the legal framework for collection.

The KSAMC has so far delivered 89 of those letters, accounting for approximately $5.7 million in outstanding revenue.

"Invoices have been issued to these dealerships and our team is actively following up to encourage payment. As of July 4th, 15 businesses, roughly 11.4%, have made payment amounting to close to $800,000. We are also making efforts to track down businesses that have relocated. Our compliance unit will continue to pursue the outstanding amounts," he promised.

The mayor said the initiative is meant to collect "well-needed resources" which are required to fund operations to ensure the municipality is managed efficiently.

He added that some of the collected funds will be used to replace missing and damaged street signs across Kingston and St. Andrew.
