As Jamaica rings in the new year, national leaders are urging citizens to face 2026 with unity, resilience and purpose.
Governor General Sir Patrick Allen says the challenges of 2025, including a general election and Hurricane Melissa, tested the nation's maturity but also revealed courage and generosity.
He is calling for cooperation, responsibility and shared sacrifice as recovery continues.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness warns that climate change, global instability and economic uncertainty will shape the year ahead.
He says Jamaica must prepare for future shocks by strengthening its ability to recover.
He notes that power and water have largely been restored, schools and hospitals are being repaired and support for storm-affected households is coming.
And Opposition Leader Mark Golding is urging transparency in recovery efforts, and says 2026 most focus on rebuilding stronger infrastructure, restoring trust and supporting families, farmers and small businesses hit hardest by the hurricane.
