The Linstead Police in St. Catherine carried out an early
morning operation at the Linstead Market in the Parish Tuesday in a bid to
clamp down on extortion.
The operation came following reports that unscrupulous persons were forcing vendors at the facility into renting stalls against their will.
RJR News understands that the police along with personnel from the St. Catherine Parish Council went to the facility shortly after 3 o'clock Tuesday morning where they destroyed over 43 wooden structures said to have been built by the extortionists.
A source at the Linstead police station told RJR News that the police have been receiving intelligence for some time that a group of thugs operating in the market, would contract persons to construct the stalls thus preventing vendors from erecting their own.
Vendors were then pressured into renting these stalls.
No arrests were made on Tuesday morning during the operation.
The police also carried out a similar operation outside the market were they destroyed 17 illegally erected stalls which were in breach of the road traffic act.
