The long-awaited local government election will be held on February 26.

Nomination Day is February 8.

The announcement was made by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie at a meeting called for Jamaica Labour Party local government candidates on Thursday afternoon at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James.

Prior to Mr. McKenzie's announcement, JLP leader and Prime Minister Andrew Holness touted the government's successes, telling the gathering of constituency chairpersons, Members of Parliament, councillor candidates and party officers that "there has never been a government of Jamaica that has had so many achievements to go and face the people with."

"You are well armed to go and face the people of Jamaica for any election", he declared.

Mr. Holness encouraged his party's candidates to embrace a new approach to local governance even as he appealed for the support of the electorate.

"There has to be radical changes to how local government operates, so I want the public to also know that though we are coming to you to ask for your vote and your support, we are also aware that you have concerns," he admitted.

Both the JLP and the opposition People's National Party had earlier announced that they had finalised their list of candidates and were prepared for the upcoming election.

The last local government poll was held on November 28, 2016.

That means what would ordinarily have been a three-year term of office has been extended to more than seven years for incumbent councillors.

Following several postponements, the election was due by the end of this month.
