The London-based Death Penalty Project wants Guyana to repeal its death sentence.
It says although the Court of Appeal in Guyana on Thursday declined to strike down the death penalty as unconstitutional, it overturned three death sentences and replaced them with life sentences.
In a statement regarding its landmark challenge to capital punishment, the organisation said the matter involved three former Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard members, who in 2013, were found guilty of robbery and murder.
The trial judge imposed death sentences on all three defendants.
The three men appealed the sentence.
The London-based group said the Court of Appeal should have declared all death sentences unconstitutional, and that given the court’s position on the issue, it would explore a further appeal to the Trinidad-based CCJ — Guyana’s highest court.
The Death Penalty Project, which has, for over three decades, been providing free legal representation to those facing the death penalty, said it offered assistance to the three appellants and supported their legal team in Guyana.
