Opposition Leader Mark Golding
Opposition Leader Mark Golding announced on Sunday that he will be renouncing his British citizenship.
He made the disclosure during a meeting of the National Executive Council of the People's National Party [PNP] of which he's President.
Mr Golding acknowledged that, data on the views of Jamaicans on the issue of political leaders holding dual citizenship informed his decision to take steps to renounce his British citizenship.
He said he had pledged that if it became apparent that the public's view was that political leaders should be exclusively Jamaican citizens he would take that into account.
He told the NEC that the PNP has received data on the views of the public on the matter and that he does not intend to allow his citizenship status to hold back the party back or impact it negatively in any other way.
In May, the Opposition Leader confirmed that he was still a British citizen (a status conferred by virtue of his father being born in the UK), but insisted that there was no legal basis for him to renounce that status in the United Kingdom at this time.
Since then however there have been numerous calls for him to renounce, led by members of the governing Jamaica Labour Party.
