Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie
By Kimone Witter
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie is to meet next week with the executive of the Association of Local Government Authorities of Jamaica (ALGA-J) to settle the grievances which led to the disruption of the organisation's annual general meeting on Friday.
Mr. McKenzie said the conduct of some councillors was disturbing and has brought local government into disrepute.
He said he is allowing tempers to cool ahead of the discussion.
"I have written to the executive of ALGA-J, inviting them to a meeting to state the position because we cannot afford to allow an important institution as local government, that offers service to the people of Jamaica, to be brought into disrepute over the position of offices which are not being contested in a legal way," he argued.
President aspirant People's National Party Councillor Scean Barnswell had claimed that the AGM began without adherence to critical constitutional guidelines, to which the PNP councillors objected.
As a result, tempers flared, during which ALGA-J President Winston Maragh sustained minor injuries to his hand.
The police were called in and the meeting brought to an abrupt end.
