Mining operations at JISCO Alpart severely affected by protest action

Mining company JISCO Alpart in Nain, St. Elizabeth has reported that it was severely affected on Friday when residents of  Brammington Hall used their bodies to block the train track from the company to Port Kaiser during a protest.

The protest started about 3.00 p.m., after the residents complained about the lack of  water and the dust nuisance, which they blamed on JISCO Alpart.

The residents expressed anger that the company had not met with them to discuss the issues.

The protest disrupted the transportation of  alumina from the plant.

Julian Kean, Public Relations Officer for JISCO Alpart, told RJR News that the company is conducting an internal assessment to determine the effects of  the disruption.

“It affected the company in a severe way; as you know the train plays a main role in our operations at JISCO Alpart Jamaica,” he said.

In an effort to address the issues that led to the protest, JISCO Alpart will be meeting with residents next week.

“It is a issue that was compounded by water issues , dusting issues and other issues from the communities. We didn’t resolve all the issues but we have planned a meeting with stakeholders for Monday….” Kean said.
