More calls for White River Rafting Village to be regulated

By Kimone Witter

There are again calls by tourism interests and the police for the regulation of operations at White River Rafting Village in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

The request comes after a man was shot by the police about 5 p.m Saturday.

It is reported that the police were in the area when they observed a group of men in a fracas.

The police intervened and one man, who was reportedly armed with a knife, was ordered to stop his advance towards another man.

The police say the man disobeyed and was shot.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Last March, the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) suspended rafting on a section of the White River, following complaints of sexual harassment, breaches of the River Rafting Act and other criminal activities.

It also outlined a plan to formalise the services on offer.

However, it was reported in February this year, that a lack of resources was crippling the efforts of TPDCo, to end illegal rafting.
