More JUTC routes to be allocated to PPV operators

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has announced that 16 new routes will be made available to operators of public passenger vehicles.

The Transport Minister, making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament on Tuesday, noted that currently the routes are held by the state owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company, but they are not being serviced by the company.

Mr Vaz told the House that reallocating the routes will optimise the level of access to transportation on those particular routes.

"Five of those routes will be stage carriage routes, which will operate under a sub-franchise from the JUTC and will be for Coaster and minibuses only," he explained.

He said these routes will originate in Shortwood, Barbican, Duhaney Park, Whitehall, Havendale, and Harbour View. They will operating through Half-Way-Tree and terminate in downtown Kingston.

"The remaining 11 routes will be offered to taxi operators, who have also been requesting additional routes, to provide improved service to the public," he announced, adding that they will operate throughout the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region.
