More than 700 derelict vehicles have been removed from streets across the Kingston & St Andrew municipality.
Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby says the ongoing removal exercise is aimed at improving the appearance of communities, clearing roadways and removing abandoned vehicles from public spaces.
But the municipal pound is now filled to capacity, as the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Corporation continues to incur significant costs to remove and store the vehicles.
"We don't have any more space for them, but apart from that, we have incurred a cost that is not recovered because here you have people who have left their vehicle on the road; we have taken them up," he noted.
The situation is compounded by the fact that "the Pound Act has handicapped us because we have to hold it for a stipulated period of time.," he said.
Some of the vehicles have gone to auction more than once, "and persons have no interest in them," he said.
"So, I just want to encourage the residents of Kingston and St Andrew that when you have your vehicle at a stage where they have become derelict, try and dispose them in the proper way."
The mayor said as well that the abandoned vehicles pose health and security risks to the public.
