The Jamaica Motorcyclists Association has rejected a suggestion for a ban on pillion riders on motorcycles to address what is said to be a growing problem of crimes committed by motorcyclists and pillion riders.
The suggestion was put forward by the Jamaican Bar Association [JAMBAR].
JAMBAR, in a release, said robberies and murders by assailants on motorcycles have been on the rise and pointed to the recent killing of paralegal Sandra Risden in rush hour traffic.
But Marlon Fletcher, a trained motorcycle instructor and former president of the Jamaica Motorcyclists Association, believes this would be a knee jerk reaction to the crime.
Mr Fletcher, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said current laws should be enforced instead, as a means of tackling criminal activities involving motorcyclists.
Nevertheless, Kevin Powell, President of the Jamaican Bar Association, is maintaining that a ban on pillion riders should be considered, given the growing trend of criminals using motorcycles to commit crimes.
