President of the Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (MSME) Alliance, Antoinette Hamilton, believes the People's National Party (PNP) was the better performing team in Tuesday night's economy debate.
Ms. Hamilton argued that the PNP was able to tell the country about its plans, while the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) was focused on blaming the opposition for the last 30 years and missed the opportunity to provide details on its plans for the next five years.
"I think Julian was excellent. He was very clear, confident, very knowledgeable in the subject matter as opposed to Minister Williams, who was not confident, seemed to at times be reading from a paper. And I think overall the PNP presented a better showing in this debate," said Ms. Hamilton, who was a guest Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106FM.
The country's two main political parties clashed over their proposed income tax breaks during Tuesday night's political debate on the economy. Representatives argued that their respective party's proposal was financially sound and to the benefit of Jamaicans.
PNP Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson said the implementation of the $3.5 million income tax break is projected to generate revenue growth of $140 billion over a three-year period.
The programme would be implemented in April 2026. Mr. Robinson explained that the projected cost of implementation is $55 billion.
"Now, no political party implements every single thing in one year. So we are going to ensure that implementation is done, which protects the fiscal sacrifices that have been made and will ensure that the adjustments are consistent with the budget. So it's $55 billion that this particular programme will cost," he outlined.
At the same time, Finance Minister Fayval Williams said the JLP would be responsible in the movement of the income tax threshold to 15 per cent, projected the cost between $25 to $35 billion.
"That is doable. We are the party that did the 1.5 in a responsible way. We are the party that moved the threshold from 1.5 to 1.7 to 1.8. Next year it will be 1.9 and then 2.0. We know how to handle the tax affairs, the revenue affairs of the country, and we are going to move with this in a responsible way over time," she stressed.
