Opposition Spokesperson on Local Government and MP for St Catherine North Central, Natalie Neita Garvey, has urged the government to temporarily open the Edward Seaga Highway to all motorists at no cost until the Bog Walk Gorge is cleared.
Mrs Neita Garvey says this proposal seeks to provide immediate relief for citizens affected by recent road closures and severe commuting disruptions following Tropical Storm Rafael.
The Gorge was rendered impassabe after several huge boulders rolled onto the road way during heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Rafael.
The National Works Agency says it will take some time before the roadway is reopened as the boulders will have to be broken into smaller pieces and an assessment conducted of the hillside to ensure its stability.
In a letter to Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Mrs Neita Garvey highlighted the storm's devastating impact on Jamaica's already damaged road network.
She underscored that temporarily providing toll-free access to the highway would provide crucial support during this challenging period.
Mrs Neita Garvey is also raising concern about the state of the road in the gorge where several boulders were dislodged.
She has highlighted large cracks in the road surface where the boulders have settled.
