The 24-year tenure of Dr. Ralph Gonsalves as Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has ended as the New Democratic Party (NDP) has defeated the Gonsalves-led United Labour Party (ULP) in the country's general election on Thursday.
NDP leader Dr. Godwin Friday is set to become the country’s seventh prime minister since independence in 1979, after his party clinched nine parliamentary seats in a closely fought contest.
The result brings an end to Gonsalves' historic run in office, during which the ULP governed continuously since 2001.
The NDP's campaign focused heavily on the economy, job creation and crime, themes that appeared to resonate with voters seeking a new direction after more than two decades of ULP rule.
