NEPA warns against possession of protected animals

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says it is taking a zero tolerance approach for breaches of the Wild Life Protection Act following the seizure of two protected parrots.

One person has been arrested and charged with the possession of and illegal sale of the birds.

NEPA says during a recent operation, the agency's enforcement branch, along with the police, carried out a joint enforcement operation in Mammee Bay, St. Ann, which resulted in the seizure of two Yellow-billed Parrots, a species protected under Jamaica's Wildlife Protection Act.

The Act prohibits the hunting and possession of a protected animal or bird without necessary permits.

Jamaica's native parrots play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

NEPA warns that under the Act, those found guilty of offences can face a maximum fine of $3 million or up to three years imprisonment.
