New Tobacco Control Bill should be debated in Parliament soon

Parliament should soon begin debate on a new Tobacco Control Bill.

Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Christopher Tufton said members of the Joint Select Committee which reviewed the bill took some time to reach a consensus.

He added that the legislation is intended to restrict smoking as much as possible and, where possible, protect people who are not smokers from interacting with secondhand smoke.

The new bill also puts the island in line to satisfy its outstanding obligations under the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Treaty, which it ratified more than 18 years ago.

The updated legislation is in response to curtailing the promotion and sale of tobacco products to children while also prohibiting the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems such as e-cigarettes in public spaces and encouraging the cessation and reduction of smoking rates in the country.
