The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) says all patients on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mandeville Regional Hospital in Manchester are safe following a minor fire at the facility on Friday morning.
About 3:45 a.m., staff members were alerted by smoke coming from a ward which houses the NICU.
Investigations revealed that smoke was coming from an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) device, which resulted in a minor fire.
The fire department was called and the fire extinguished.
SRHA Chairman Wayne Chen told Radio Jamaica News that staff members immediately removed the 11 newborns and relocated them to an appropriate area of the paediatric ward.
He commended the staff for their "quick and decisive action" in ensuring that the babies were protected and safe.
The hospital's CEO, Alwyn Miller, said an assessment was conducted and the source of the fire has been rectified.
Usage of the area will resume before the end of Friday.
