Nine people died in motor vehicle crashes on the weekend.

The deceased included brothers who were driving motorcycles in Spot Valley, St. James.

The number of fatalities since January now stands at 288, compared with 319 for the corresponding period last year.

Vice President of the National Road Safety Council Dr. Lucien Jones said this represents a decline of 10 per cent.

Nevertheless, he maintained that the "carnage on the roads is troubling".

Five of those who died on the weekend were motorcyclists, he noted, adding that since the start of the year, 95 of those killed were motorcyclists.

Dr. Jones said the number of fatal crashes involving motorcyclists is of major concern to the National Road Safety Council.

"This is the number one problem we have on our roads. Young men who are dying, young men who are dying because they are speeding and driving recklessly; young men who are using alcohol and ganja, who are driving.... We have to get on top of this problem. We cannot allow so many of our young men to be dying on our roads," he said, noting that there is still difficulty enforcing the wearing of helmets.
