Newly minted Information Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon has sought to further clarify statements made by Transport Minister Daryl Vaz which revealed immigration related data about Opposition Leader Mark Golding.

Mr. Vaz's comments have sparked concerns from the People's National Party (PNP), which says the disclosure breached Mr. Golding's privacy rights.

The opposition has also raised concern about the potential impact of Mr. Vaz's statement, contending that it could undermine the government's push for the National Identification System (NIDS).

Minister Vaz on Tuesday also said there were no secrets once an individual became a public figure.

In defending how the information on Mr. Golding was solicited, Mr. Vaz indicated that an internal PNP source had passed on the details.

Minister Morris Dixon has said there was no violation committed, adding that the Transport Minister must have meant that "when you are a public official, there are always people who know things about you, and there are always people who, for whatever reason, may pass information on you".

She said the Andrew Holness administration has been the most committed to enforcing data protection laws.

"The reality is a lot of money has been spent on data protection and data privacy," she said, noting that when enforcement of the Data Protection Act begins on June 1, all government entities must comply.

Dr. Morris Dixon was speaking during Wednesday morning's post Cabinet press briefing.

Some Jamaicans have expressed a lack of trust in NIDS when it comes to data security.
