Former President of the Incorporated Masterbuilders Association of Jamaica, Lenworth Kelly, says he is not anticipating serious economic fallout from the shortage of cement.

Caribbean Cement Company, on Sunday, confirmed the shortage following an increased demand for the construction material post Hurricane Beryl.

The construction sector, which has been on the decline for several quarters, is a critical indicator of growth and any disruptions could affect economic outputs.

Mr. Kelly, who believes there is no need for worry, says the lack of supply is typical in the local market.

He is expecting a return to normality within a week.

"It's just a matter of when supply gets back to you. And I know the supply is back up, but it has to get to every little town, every little location. I know the bulk suppliers would be receiving now, but I'm not expecting any significant contribution to a decline, as it were."

Admitting that the construction industry is cyclic, Mr. Kelly said the country must "be mindful that we had a significant spike, and so we would expect some trending down".

Carib Cement has indicated that the supply and demand gap is expected to be plugged within the coming days.

The company had provided confirmation after completing its scheduled annual maintenance.

A supply of cement is stored for the period of scheduled maintenance, during which the company temporarily halts production of the material.
