NRSC vice chair says current fines sufficent to curb reckless driving

 

Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones, says he is not in favour of increased fines to curb reckless driving and road fatalities.

 

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Wednesday, Dr. Jones said the current fines are sufficient to deal with the crisis. 

 

"I wouldn't lobby for an increase in fines, but I think we need to allow the improved system to play out," he suggested. 

 

"Jamaicans will realise that if you run a red light... if you speed, you get a ticket, then the system is going to work. And if you're not careful, you can lose your licence through accumulating demerit points, or you can pay hefty fines. So I think over a period of time, the system will work. We just have to give it time to see what happens," the Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council maintained.

 

He said the introduction of cameras, which he hopes will come soon, will assist in catching perpetrators. 

 

Some 279 road fatalities have been recorded so far this year.
