NSWMA: Closure of Riverton City disposal site still under consideration

Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority Audley Gordon

Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority [NSWMA] Audley Gordon has affirmed that the proposed replacement of the Riverton City dump with a proper landfill elsewhere is still being pursued.

The Riverton City facility, the only official garbage disposal site for Kingston & St. Andrew, has long been a source of discomfort and dissatisfaction for residents of Jamaica's capital city, particularly during outbreaks of fire at the site, as happened last week.

Radio Jamaica News therefore asked him on Tuesday for an update on the relocation plan.

"That is something that is under active consideration," he responded, adding that, in keeping with that goal, "there's a Riverton City Closure Plan in place."

He stressed however that it was not his responsibility to make any relevant announcement, pointing instead to the Ministry of Local Government "or the Cabinet."

Cause

Regarding the latest Riverton City fire, which started on April 9, Mr Gordon was still not able to say what was the cause, as the probe was still underway.

The fire resulted in a blanket of smoke engulfing sections of the corporate area and St Catherine.

He said, while there is no foolproof measure that can be instituted to prevent future fires at the facility, the agency is determined to minimise the impact.
