The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says all systems have been placed on high alert as Tropical Storm Rafael formed heads towards Jamaica.

Tropical Storm Rafael formed in the Caribbean on Monday and is expected to move near the island on Monday evening.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in place for Jamaica. This means tropical storm conditions are expected to affect Jamaica within 24 hours.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, on Monday afternoon, Richard Thompson, acting head of ODPEM, said a high level meeting was held on Sunday with all stakeholders, including the utility companies and the Met Office.

Utility providers Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), National Water Commission (NWC), Digicel and Flow have reported that they have implemented measures ahead of the storm.

Mr. Thompson said shelter managers in several parishes have been placed on alert in the event there is major damage or dislocations caused by the storm.

Meanwhile, he urged residents in flood-prone communities to take the necessary measures to ensure their safety, adding that motorists and pedestrians should not try to cross flooded roadways or gullies.
