A man is dead and eight others in custody after a licensed firearm holder foiled the robbery of a Western Union outlet in Hope Bay on Monday morning.
Police say armed men broke into the businessplace about 2:30 a.m., when the licensed firearm holder challenged them, wounding one of the would-be robbers.
The police quickly arrived and took control of the scene.
The wounded man was taken to hospital where he later died.
The police recovered a motor vehicle as well as a 9mm pistol and several rounds of ammunition.
Two of the people in custody are women. The police say they are the mother and sister of one of the suspects.
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News at the scene, residents of Hope Bay commended the police for their quick response.
A bystander noted that the suspects did not appear to be from the area. The police later confirmed that the suspects were from Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine addresses.
The residents said other businesses in the seaside community have been the target of thieves.
Radio Jamaica News was informed that this is the third attempted break-in at the Western Union outlet.
