Agriculture Minister Floyd Green says this year's onion crop is promising.
The minister, who was on a tour of onion farms at the Yallahs Agro-park and Abbey in St. Thomas, said the farmers have gone to great lengths to increase production.
"Not only the hectares that we've targeted, but one of the big pluses is that we're trying to up the productivity. We want to ensure that people are getting the yield out of the hectares. And to be honest, we're seeing on the most part, the farmers are making the productivity targets, but we're even seeing some farmers exceed the productivity targets," he disclosed.
Minister Green said the production target for February was exceeded.
"So this year will be our biggest production year for our onions, and I think that is a testament to the hard work of RADA (Rural Agricultural Development Authority) and the Ministry of Agriculture," he touted.
He said the ministry projected the planting of 400 hectares of onions this season, and already 202 hectares of this amount have been planted.
He added that more planting is scheduled, reiterating that the largest production of onions will take place this year.
