Dr Andre Haughton, Opposition Spokesman on Science & Technology
The Opposition is recommending "swift and decisive action" in the face of a troubling surge in cyber-attacks on Government agencies.
Dr Andre Haughton, Opposition Spokesman on Science & Technology, says the attacks have put the country's technological infrastructure in jeopardy.
Dr Haughton's call comes in the wake of a ransomware attack on the Bureau of Standards Jamaica, which has so far cost the agency J$36.1 million to procure the services of international companies, Dell and Fortinet.
According to a document obtained by The Gleaner, the companies have been hired to recover and secure the BSJ's Information and Communications Technology structure.
The breach, which occurred in February, reportedly stemmed from a phishing attack that compromised some staff credentials and potentially exposed BSJ's systems to malware.
The BSJ's Executive Director, Dr Velton Gooden, told The Gleaner that none of the entity's core systems were affected and there was removal or extraction of data from its ICT environment.
Dr Haughton, commenting on the revelations on Saturday, said the attack at the BSJ is part of a disturbing pattern affecting several government agencies over the last year, leading to substantial financial losses and threatening national security.
He''s also recommended strengthening regulatory frameworks and developing response strategies.
