Opposition Spokesperson on Labour Wavell Hinds
Opposition Spokesperson on Labour, Wavell Hinds, is raising concern regarding discussions about removing redundancy payment protections from Jamaica's labour laws.
Some trade union leaders say they are prepared to challenge a push by the private sector for the repeal of the Employment (Termination and Redundancy Payments) Act.
The proposal by the private sector is for unemployment insurance to replace redundancy payments.
Private sector companies have complained that redundancy payments are costly to their operations.
But in a statement Friday, Mr. Hinds emphasised the critical role redundancy payments play in providing financial security and relief for workers in the absence of a mandatory pension system.
"They ensure that employees have something to rely on during the uncertain period between jobs. These payments are far more than just money. They acknowledge the years of service and dedication that workers have given to their organisations. They also act as a safeguard against unfair labour practices. Without them, companies could use redundancy as an easy way to terminate employees unfairly," he pointed out.
Mr. Hinds added that redundancy payments, which are calculated based on the duration of an employee's service, serve as one of the few protections available to Jamaican workers in a labour market with limited safety nets.
He urged policymakers to consider alternatives that balance the needs of both employers and workers.
