Member of Parliament for St. Mary Western, Robert Montague, says Oracabessa Primary School is slated for major upgrading work.

It follows a fire at the institution on Wednesday night which destroyed three wooden buildings at the institution.

Acting Principal of the school, Winsome McFarlene Forbes, says the blaze, which has resulted in significant losses, started in the reading room.

"The section that housed the reading labs and other facilities of the school was destroyed. A maximum of 19 students normally are housed there at any one time. So while there is an effect on the school community, there is not much in terms of physical damage when you look at the whole and wider picture," noted the MP.

However, Mr. Montague said the school is set to benefit from major upgrading work which will be carried out by the National Education Trust.

The upgrades will include some 20 classrooms, a new staff room, new canteen, new auditorium, new computer lab as well as a new sewage system.

"And I had insisted that a solar system to operate the school be included into that. So it's almost a brand new school that is going to be built," he touted.
