The pilot of an aircraft that crashed Friday morning in Hampstead, St. Mary has died.
He is Major Dudley Beek, former commanding officer for the Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing Reserves.
A trainee pilot who was also aboard the single-engine aircraft has been hospitalised. He is said to be in serious condition.
The plane crashed sometime after 10:00 a.m.
According to police reports, the two left Ian Fleming International Airport in St. Mary for Tinson Pen Aerodrome in Kingston. On their return flight, the aircraft developed mechanical difficulties and crashed.
It's further reported that a team from the Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing conducted rescue operations and both men were airlifted to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
Major Beek was pronounced dead sometime before noon.
The Jamaica Defence Force has cordoned off the site as part of an investigation into the cause of the crash.
