Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has declared that the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) is the most transformative and enduring initiative in Jamaica's fight against poverty.
Prime Minister Holness says the NSHP has been delivering not only shelter, but also dignity and hope to the nation's most vulnerable.
Speaking Thursday at the latest house handover ceremony in Whitehall, St. Thomas, he said the NSHP is not merely a shelter programme, but a sustainable intervention that is delivering long-term hope to Jamaicans in dire housing conditions.
Dr. Holness described the NSHP as a multi-tiered initiative that addresses a wide range of vulnerable groups, including victims of domestic abuse, the elderly, persons with disabilities, those affected by disasters and low-income earners.
He added that this programme will also add a new dimension to benefit workers in industries like tourism, where formal housing has lagged behind employment growth.
Meanwhile, Dr. Holness said his administration has started more than 31,000 housing units through the National Housing Trust since 2016.
"So over the last nine years, we have completed 21,166 units. And we have, in terms of housing starts, we started 31,540. So what that means is you will always have houses in some stage of development. So you could have housing that have been started and houses completed," he pointed out.
