PM pours cold water on “patois” lessons

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has added his voice to the current debate on teaching the Jamaican Creole, popularly known as "patois", in schools.

Mr. Golding said the teaching of the native tongue as a second language in schools would be an admission of failure.

Addressing the graduation ceremony at the Kingsway High School on Sunday the Prime Minister said the teaching or translation of the bible into "patois" would mean that we have failed to impart the accepted Language, English.

He said he is waiting to hear those involved in the language debate explain how "patios" is going to be used to understand history, science and mathematics.

The Prime Minister added that until this is explained, the idea will not be one that is up for debate in the House of Parliament.
