Political commentator Damion Gordon

At least one political commentator is lauding Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness for the swift appointment of senators to fill three of the vacancies in the Upper House following resignations.

Damion Gordon says this will ensure the important legislative institution will remain functional.

Dr. Holness announced on Wednesday that he had written to Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen, recommending the appointment of Dr. Elon Thompson, Marlon Morgan and Delano Seiveright to the Senate.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Thursday morning, Mr. Gordon said at least one of the names took him by surprise.

He noted that Marlon Morgan and Delano Seiveright have been longstanding spokespersons, known to be "quite bullish" on behalf of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, so their appointments may be considered a reward for their loyalty. Still, he said the addition of Dr. Thompson, with his expertise, should make him a worthy addition to the Senate.

Deputy Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams and former Attorney General Ransford Braham resigned from the Upper House this week, while Matthew Samuda and Don Wehby left the role last year.

This means there is still one vacancy to be filled to complete the slate of 13 senators on the government side.
