Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness has again said the government is eyeing St Elizabeth as the parish in which to establish a purpose-built city.
Dr Holness, without detailing the exact location, stated that the parish is ideal for the kind of development envisioned.
This location, he said, was "the area that we have been advised is the best area to do an entirely new city, and it is because all the requisite elements to to create a new city exist here..."
He added that it would not be wise to replicate featues of the existing cities of Montego Bay and Kingston, but rather, "to create some thing unique, and therefore this parish - St. Elizabeth - would be where we would be looking to develop our new city."
The Prime Minister was speaking Saturday at the opening of the newest branch of KFC, in Black River.
On August 18, 2023 he had disclosed that the Urban Development Corporation had been instructed to "look at the entire region, between Kingston, going all the way to St. Elizabeth to see where is the best place for a new city to be located."
In his address in Black River on Saturday, he also reiterated that a plan is in place to develop each parish around its unique and existing resources.
He pointed to the development that is underway in St Thomas as a template.
