Prime Minister Andrew Holness has asserted that the government is moving to improve the lives of residents of St Thomas.

The Prime Minister, speaking in the parish on Friday, said the government was aware of the challenges faced by the people of the parish, citing "even the history of St. Thomas, of general neglect."

The roads, "generally throughout the parish, are in back condition," he admitted, noting likewise that "a large percentage of the settlements don't have reliable potable water."

There are problems associated with the hospital in the parish and access with healthcare, as well challenges with "regular infrascture" throughout the parish, such as the current courthouse, the municipal building and the market.

He conceded that the issues will take time to be resolved but promised that "in less than five years this parish is going to see significant transformation."

Hightlighted the fact that the new South Coast Highway running through the parish has been completed and that construction of the new Morant Bay Urban Centre will be finished shortly (featuring facilities such as a new courthouse, municipal building, police station, a bank etc.)

A tourism boom is also on the horizon for St. Thomas, the Prime Minister promised, noting that "already we have about three or four tourism projects that are at varying stages of development."

Dr Holness was speaking at the handing over of a fully furnished house under the Indigent Housing Solution Programme at Stewart Field, Seaforth.

He said the parish will soon see more housing developments as well.
