PM says gov't seeking to ensure JPS customers treated fairly

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says he has asked Energy Minister Daryl Vaz to ensure Jamaicans are treated fairly by the Jamaica Public Service Company in the wake of the company's announcement that some customers may receive estimated bills this month.

During a meeting on Sunday, the membership of the Jamaica Labour Party's Central Executive expressed concern about the pace at which the JPS is restoring power to some sections of the island and the intention of the JPS to pursue estimated billing for some customers.

Mr. Holness told the meeting that he has spoken with Energy Minister Daryl Vaz and advised him that all appropriate and lawful steps must be taken to ensure customers are treated in a fair and equitable manner by the electricity company.

The Prime Minister reported that Minister Vaz has already had preliminary discussions with the Office of Utilities Regulation.

On Friday while reacting to the announcement regarding estimated bills, Mr. Vaz said he has had discussions with the OUR and proposed an extension of the due dates for bill payment.

Mr. Holness said Mr. Vaz has also moved to seek the OUR's intervention in ensuring additional and rigorous oversight of the light and power company's maintenance schedule.

He said the government is considering a review of the JPS Act to have more relevant regulations in the maintenance of the distribution network, particularly to ensure trees are not planted close to power lines and that potential hazards are removed.
