PNP blasts Government over housing "failures," promises better alternative

Mark Golding

The People's National Party has criticized the government for what it describes as a failure to deliver on its housing promises to Jamaicans.

PNP President Mark Golding says despite a 2020 pledge by the Holness Administration to build 70,000 houses by 2025, only 14,741 have been delivered after nine years in office.

Mr. Golding, in a statement with accompanying audio released to the media, further highlighted that under the Government's current five-year term, just 7,950 National Housing Trust houses have been completed.

He said, of particular concern is the unmet commitment to reserve 30 per cent of new houses for public sector workers and to prioritize young people aged 18 to 35 years.

"You've failed to deliver on both of those promises for young people and public sector workers," he charged, noting as well another commitment to deliver one thousand social houses per year, "yet fewer than 300 have been delilvered in nine years..."

Mr. Golding reiterated his promise that a PNP administration will end the J$11.4 billion annual diversion of NHT funds to support the budget.

Instead, he said a government led by him wiill use the funds to launch its $1 billion Young Owners Fund to assist first-time home buyers under 35, and build 50,000 affordable homes over five years.
